From Bohemian theatre-land to the aristocratic formality of a great house.
From the centre of London to the depths of Cornwall.
From the familiar to the utterly strange.

Downton Abbey meets Greek Myth
Cleo Otway, daughter of a celebrated actress, happy in her life in 1930s London, enters a new world when she arrives at Landrake House in Cornwall. An historic house set in glorious grounds. A place of dreams—and delusions.
There Cleo meets Lord Landrake, her austere and disapproving new stepfather. His three unhappy, unprincipled daughters, who treat her with disdain. His aloof nephew, terrified by nightmares.
And Fitz Falconer, her guide through the labyrinth of blackmail and dark secrets that haunt the Landrake family.

One of the things I love most about my Kindle is discovering authors I would not have found from browsing in bookstores or the library. My Kindle led me to Elizabeth Edmondson, and she has become one of my favorites. She tells a good story with interesting characters and does a good job capturing the era about which she is writing.

I liked this book, but not as well as some of her others. I liked the main characters, and the mystery was subtle and kept me guessing - for much of the book I did not even know what the mystery was! But, the story did drag a bit, and there were so many characters it was a bit confusing at times.

Recommended, but if you have not read Elizabeth Edmondson before, start with another of her books, because you'll probably like them better.

Elizabeth Edmondon's books are quite addictive. She has a talent for presenting characters rapidly and with appeal, making deft use of dialog. The people in this story seem familiar --- they are vaguely connected with people in some of her other works. I liked the plot contortions and the not-so-predictable ending. A pleasant read.
I love books with characters I would like to know myself. Good character development is a must for a really good read and Ms. Edmondson does this beautifully. Her plots have just enough zigs and zags to keep a readers interest. I will most likely read all her writing before I'm finished.
This turned out to be a very interesting novel. Interesting storyline and I liked the main characters. Conclusion was surprising, too. My only complaint is there were so many errors in the editing that it was hard to follow.
This story was okay ,but did not capture my attention. The characters are selfish and one dimensional. I was hoping for a more complex mystery, not just whiny characters out for inheritance only. The murders of the past were not shocking just more of the same selfish intentions. Her other books are better.
I highly enjoyed the series, and decided to try some other books by this author. I did not enjoy this one. The characters were not likable. If I am spending time with people, even people who are book characters, I prefer to spend time with people I enjoy.
The story itself was okay, the writing is good, I just didn't care for it.
Edmondson is a skilled writer, and it took a lot of skill to keep all the balls she was tossing....in the air.
Huge cast, with so many darkly hinted-at secrets. I agree with other reviewers that this is not a favorite in the
Edmondson offerings. Too many unpleasant people with no redeeming qualities. Somehow it all got
resolved, but it was a struggle.
Although this book had far too many editing errors, I did enjoy reading this mystery and all the surrounding adventures that Olivia and Fitz experienced while at Landrake. There were many characters to keep straight, especially in the first half of the book, but it seemed to pick up and make more sense as we gained a better picture of the complicated relationships that had developed over many years between the children, cousins and unhappy members of this family. I hope the next book builds on Olivia's growing confidence and interests and her attraction to Fitz, as they head to Paris with another war looming.
