Cellular Biology The Quick Guide Charles River Editors Reviews

An excellent book written in a manner that isn't overwhelmingly technical. I recently looked at my granddaughter's 10th grade AP level biology text book. I would expect that level of difficulty in med school. I asked her if she understood any of it. She told me she understood just enough to pass the test after which she said she didn't won't remember. She gets an A in her AP biology class. A book like Cellular Biology might have inspired an interest in the subject, not disdain.

We need a mass firing of teachers and the school budget reduced by 50 percent. I can't tell you how disgusted I am by the ghastly system of education we have created in the past 50 years in the USA. When I graduated from high school I had an interest, if not a grad level school knowledge of vital subjects such as history, math, English, and French. The only subject I ever failed was Latin. It remains one of the few subjects I have a profound respect for and which I would make mandatory for all college prep students.

The greatest abomination is that now the goal of high school seems directed on having the students get a high[er] score on the College Boards or ACT [?]. I can tell you what will ensure higher scores, at least in verbal skills. Start the children reading at as early an age as possible. Parents should read to their children practically from birth. Natural readers don't need SAT tutors. They already read and appreciate books, and are far more likely to get higher scores. Of course there is a strong correlation between high IQ and higher test scores. My parents ripped me out of my senior year of high school and sent me to the "fifth form" of a snotty prep school so I would get higher scores. My SAT scores dropped. I finally went to U. of North Carolina where they allowed you to take a by-pass test so you didn't have to take subjects you already knew. My friend who got a A in high school French, and I got a C which should have been a D. So I skipped two semesters of French and passed the equivalent of the third year level of French. I also skipped freshman math, and freshman English. My straight A buddy skipped nothing.

I got about a 550 on my English SAT in my final year of high school and about and barely 500 in math. I quit college and joined the Air Force. On a lark after being in the USAF a couple of years I retook the SAT. I got a 695 in English, and almost 600 in math. I had a friend in the prep school I mentioned who got 800s in all SATs he took. He went to Harvard, quit after one semester and joined the Army and was sent to Vietnam. Go figure.
informative for kids
